In the late 1980's, interest in girls' ice hockey in Connecticut exploded. Unlike states like Massachusetts, however, there were limited opportunities to play on all-girls teams, especially at the high school level. In 1991, a group of parents decided to address this issue by forming a 19 & Under team as part of the Southern Connecticut Youth Hockey program in Milford, Connecticut. In 1996, Kevin "Moe" Tarrant and John "Luddie" Ludwig began coaching the team and have been at the heart of Stars Hockey ever since.
Over the next seven years, Stars Hockey saw steady growth, leading to the addition of a 15 & Under team in 1999 and 12 & Under team in 2002. Success attracted even more interest and, in late 2002, the program had grown beyond the ability of the Southern Connecticut program to provide ice.
Given this constraint, Stars Hockey elected to leave the Southern Connecticut fold in 2003 and become an independent organization within the Connecticut Hockey Conference. The Stars also moved their home ice to the twin rinks at the Danbury Ice Arena in Danbury, CT, allowing them to double the number of teams offered from three to six. In 2006, the Stars made another move to The Rinks at Shelton, a state-of-the-art complex which provides greater access to girls from across Connecticut. The Rinks at Shelton allows the Stars to offer a comprehensive development program, including on and off ice training.
